Subject    10/19/2019 - - Onions
Body
  • Prices continue steady on Jumbo yellows.  Overall size profile is larger now and the NW will see a nominal season.

  • Weather is closing in but harvest is just about wrapped up.  Look for prices to slowly rise as growers regain control over inventories.

  • Red prices are fairly steady.  White onions continue to be weak.

  • However, Export potential (particularly Mexico) within the next few weeks will push the market a bit.

  • WA and Idaho Sweets are now available. Quality and condition is outstanding.  Organic red, yellows, whites and sweets are available as well.

Subject    10/19/2019 - - Potatoes
Body
  • Idaho is pushing hard to get potatoes out of the ground as inclement weather closes in.
  • Below freezing temps, snow and rain in the forecast for eastern Idaho.
  • Not looking good for long term storage supplies from that state.  WA/OR are wrapping up harvest within next week or so.
  • This may be an interesting marketing season.  Small cartons are in good supply and deals can be found.
  • Large sizes are tight in most growing districts. 50's and larger will remain tight for the season.
  • Idaho is full production of Norkotah and Burbank potatoes.  50 and larger are tight. 60 and smaller pricing has been dropping weekly.
  • Profile in Idaho is  heavy to the small profile. Quality and condition is outstanding on New spuds light skin set noted on ID Burbanks.
  • Russet ORGANICs are available!!

Subject    10/19/2019 - - Berries
Body
  • While the northern STRAWBERRY deal winds down, Santa Maria and Oxnard continue to build volume.
  • Weather patterns have been favorable so far this fall, with seasonable warm days and cooler nights.
  • The newer, larger fruit is going to be found down south, (commanding higher prices).
  • Watsonville/Salinas berries are still showing good quality. Only a couple of more weeks up north.
  • BLUEBERRIES and BLACKBERRIES are both very tight as Mexico and offshore arrivals ramps up.
  • RASPBERRIES remain the easiest of the three bush berries with good supplies.

    Subject    10/19/2019 - - Broccoli
    Body
    • We saw a surprising increase in the BROCCOLI market last week as most shippers called for ‘steady’ supplies.
    • Harvest numbers declined, and quality issues pushed the market up on both bunched and crowns.
    • It is definitely a supply-side affair as demand has stayed relatively flat. We expect BROCCOLI to remain active this week and next.
    • Infact, we’re anticipating it to stay strong into the transition and until the desert deal gets going toward the end of November.
    • Quality has improved a little, but most shippers will are quoting some combination of yellow or brown bead, hollow core or even some pin rot.

    Body
    • ACTIVE MARKET.
    • We are still looking at a very active market, with remaining acreage going to still fall short of our time left in Salinas.
    • As projected, the Salinas lettuce shippers have taken prices up trying to slow down the demand.
    • Also, the local processers have all raised their pricing on iceberg based products to help slow this train down.
    • Groundwork has been set and we are in for a wild ride for the next month.

    Body
    • Demand on both GREEN LEAF and RED LEAF has increased following on the coattails of ROMAINE.
    • Supplies of both are tightening as we get ready to transition to the desert in a few weeks.
    • Weights and sizing are affecting yields, adding to an overall stronger leaf market.
    • Both ROMAINE and ROMAINE HEARTS are in ‘challenge’ mode…not quite demand/exceed yet, but not far from it.
    • As was the case  last week, quality issues are still showing up in lots around town…wind burn, fringe burn, and seeders.

    Body
    • Mexico numbers are holding their own.  Fruit is peaking in the mid sizes 48/40/60's with larger fruit on the light side.

    • We expect to have to have fairly decent supplies of 48's crossing.  Shippers are still trying to get a handle on MX crop for the balance of the year.

    • Fruit is fairly clean so not a lot of #2 product which is keeping this market relatively close.

    • Market has come off but is slightly the last week or so but expected to stay fairly steady.

    Body
    • Calif Lemons are just fair out of District 2 (Ventura area).
    • District 3 (Desert) is going but still struggling a bit on color and size.  Fruit in general is peaking on 140 with larger and smaller sizes very scarse.
    • Mexico is also crossing some fruit into TX.  Market for 115 and larger is very strong due to lack of fruit.
    • We are even seeing the 140's start to strengthen as customers adjust needs for what is available.

    • Cantaloupe supplies on the west side continue light.  Cool temperatures are slowing maturity but bringing up the sizing.

    • Market has been stronger especially on smaller size due to lack of warmth.  This week is seeing a cooling trend that will continue this pattern.

    • Sizing is jbo9/9 with just a few 12's and smaller. Color is tan to concrete with some occasional ground spotting.  Quality is good and eat great.
