Subject    8/20/2018 - - Avocado
Body
  • Avocado supplies are low from Calif and Mexico causing a very active market.   Demand exceeds supplies out of all areas.
  • The market is expected to stay this way until Mexico gets into new crop fruit in late Sept.
  • Mexico crossing Flora Loca fruit at this time and supplies are light.  This is not being helped by rains disrupting harvest.
  • As such market is up on all sizes but especially on 48's and larger.
  • Currently peaking 48/70/60's.
  • Mexico will continue to cross through August with the Flora Loca/off bloom fruit and should start new crop fruit in Mid Sept.
  • California already hit its peak volume in late June and is on its downward slide.
  • Calif July/August heat waves have caused the late season to wind up faster than normal. Floor counts are relatively clean.
  • Crop is sizing mostly 48/60/70's. Fruit is firm, ripening fast; with nice oil content to offer up great eating flavor.
  • Demand has been strong.   Market stronger.
  • Peru is arriving in the US and should help fill through Sept peaking mostly 40/48/36's.... great for filling those larges size needs.
  • Quality and condition are looking good.  Volume is expected to go into Sept. Chile is starting to arriving with light numbers

Subject    8/20/2018 - - Lemons
Body
  • Lemons are a Summer mess; market is still up but not jumping as fast as it was seems to have stabilizes temporarily at lease.

  • Availability loosening up slightly.  "Force Majeure - Act of God" remains in effect and DEMAND still exceeds supply.

  • We are starting to see customers search out alternatives (of course this is increasing demand and markets in other commodities-- see Limes).

  • We are still not expecting the market to improve until mid Sept-- this is on all sizes/grades.

  • Get your orders in early and be prepared to pro-rations and cuts. Imports are selling well everyone is basically at the same market.

  • Chile fruit is heavy to fancy.   Mexico is mostly choice/standard but is being slowed by rains in growing areas.

  • Neither area is showing heavy volume.  This fruit is peaking 140/165/200.   Imports are helping a little on supply side of this situation.

Subject    8/20/2018 - - Melons Cantaloupe/Honeydew

  • Hot temps have fruit coming off fast with the Westside in full swing.  Interior exterior color nice, solid centers, and eating well (high sugars).

  • Honeydew market is picking up and volume is fairly good.  Sizing is peaking on Jumbo 5/6 with minimal supplies of 8's.

  • This will remain the case for the balance of the month size wise. Color and condition are good to excellent.

  • Mixed Melons are excellent but winding up for the season.  With some varieties already done.  Packed in single variety or mixed pack.

  • Sizing is predominately 5/6's and quality is very good.

Body
  • Valencias are peaking 88/72/113/56 and eating good with nice color (little re-greening showing)/high sugar levels and occasional softness.
  • Fruit harvest is slow with Cailf stone fruit/grapes going; picking crews are spread thin.
  • Hot temperatures are not helping causing picking to finish up before lunch in some cases.
  • Demand and markets are starting to pick up as customers get ready for school business.
  • This is putting a lot of pressure on 138/113 which was already very limited.  Market on small fruit is moving up fast.
  • Be prepared with some lead time on orders--- maybe even consider some offshore tangerines?? for your small fruit needs.

  • Kent and Keitt mangos are being imported from Mexico, however, the Keitt variety will represent most of the volume going forward.
  • Both varieties are exhibiting reasonable quality. The Keitt variety is showing a higher percentage of fruit with cosmetic defects.
  • This is due to the thinner and more delicate skin of the Keitt variety. Sizing is peaking on 7s, 8s, and 9s.
  • As the season out of Mexico begins to draw to a close, volume is expected to drop and prices are expected to increase.
