Subject    10/22/2018 - - Apples
Body
  • Almost all shippers are done packing c.a. storage apples from the 2017-2018 crop. There are a few shippers finishing up storage Reds & Fuji.
  • All other varieties are now new crop in the north west. Small sizes 125/smaller are tighter this season, with apple sizing being larger in the orchards.
  • Varieties that are really tough to find for small apples are Gala, Granny & Golden Del.
  • Sizing is still holding to what we were seeing in the orchards, 1-2 sizes larger.
  • There are a few remaining NZ imports here in WA. New crop varieties available: Red del, Gold del, Granny, Fuji, Braeburn, Jonagold, & Honeycrisp.
  • Cameo & Pink Lady will begin over the next few weeks. There are some issues with bitter pit in the early new crop varieties.

Subject    10/22/2018 - - Potatoes
Body
  • Market is steady with a strong undertone now that everything is undercover in WA & OR.  Idaho..... not so much!
  • Idaho shippers continues to sell at or below grower costs.
  • It bears repeating that once everything is undercover and accounted for growers will become bullish.
  • Initial figures point to a shortage in North America as well as EU as compared to the last 5 years.
  • Currently Idaho has good supply of Norkotahs which are peaking on the large size.
  • Burbanks are being harvested and are peaking on a more nominal smaller profile. Look for the prices to migrate upward as well.
  • Nighttime freezing temps this week and last has potential to cause quality issues in storage in Idaho as there are still many acres yet to harvest.
  • Russet organics are available.

Subject    10/22/2018 - - Broccoli
Body
  • While last week began with a steady market, cool nighttime temperatures slowed plant growth down causing lighter supplies around both Salinas and Santa Maria.
  • With demand getting a little bit better, pricing on both bunched and crowns began to climb as the week went on.
  • We’re expecting this week to be more of the same. Supplies will remain on the lighter side helping to prop up pricing.
  • Quality is still being reported as very good, with some purpling and a little hollow core remaining around.

Subject    10/22/2018 - - Melons Cantaloupe/Honeydew
Body
  • Cantaloupe volume is sizing 12's/15's with westside done.

  • Volume is tight out of the desert especially on larger sizes.   Color is on the green to concrete side with maturity struggling.

  • Solid centers, and eating fair.  Market expected to stay up for next 10 days at least.

  • Some of the Desert and Nogales fruit could show dirt due to recent weather.

Body
  • Valencia are peaking 72/56 and shippers are pushing to get cleaned up.

  • Demand and markets continue strong on small 138/113 which remain limited.

  • You will see some condition issues -- softness/occasional decay/scarring. Quality is just fair but sugar levels are high.

  • Now for the sort of good news. Growers got out down in the Kern County/Bakersfield areas and started PICKING Navels the end of the week.

  • This fruit will need lots of gassing to color up. We anticipated having some light numbers the end of the week to ship.

  • Sizing right now will be on small fruit 113/138/88. Be aware sugar levels are considerable off from the Valencia.

  • It will be 2-3 weeks before we have consistent supplies and volume on this fruit and pre-books will be needed.

  • Growers are still looking for consistent cool nights and lower daytime temps to bring up natural fruit coloring.

  • Not to mention rain wouldn't hurt either to size fruit up a bit.

  • Navel fruit set is out and we are expecting good volume for the season with fruit peaking 88/113.
