Subject    9/19/2017 - - Onions
Body
  • Onion prices remain steady to higher on larger sizes.
  • Jumbo Yellows are in high demand and the price reflects that. Some growers are continuing to push price and get it.
  • Idaho so far is peaking on larger sizes while WA/OR seem to be producing a smaller profile.
  • Regardless; Good demand combined with shorter supplies this season may present the market with a fairly firm, steady year.
  • White Onions continue to stay strong with higher demand.  Yellow sweets available.  ORGANIC are now available-all colors.

Subject    9/19/2017 - - Potatoes
Body
  • New Crop Russets are in good supply with undertone of weakening prices.
  • WA/OR; Large potatoes remain tight in early fields which is giving strength to the large counts.
  • Packing continues directly from the field - most fields have been peaking on smaller profiles so far.
  • However, with cooler weather and hints of weaker prices on the horizon, many growers in this area are starting to go to storage a bit early.
  • This thinking is due to strong data that suggests the US russet crop for 2017 is down 4% from last season.
  • Average yields are also said to be down 7cwt per acre from last season.
  • Idaho; Potato volumes are mostly coming from the "summer runners" currently, which in turn continues to weaken prices quickly as they are packing from the field and do not seem concerned about long term markets.
  • These early fields are producing larger profiles and consequently lower prices for them. Simply put: supply and demand.
  • There is some size to the spuds  in these early fields.
  • Word on the street is that these lower prices will not last into the fall as fields yet to be harvest in Idaho have NOT sized up as projected.
  • Burbank potatoes will be available by early October.
  • Overall quality is good; Russets are showing very nice skin set thanks to the dry, warm weather throughout the growing season and harvest.
  • Large sizes will most likely be at a premium most of the season-once the spuds are in the barn. Organic Russets are available.
